How do I use my pace to plan a race?

Enter a recent training run or race result — the distance and time you actually covered — and the calculator works out your pace per km and per mile, then projects what that same pace would produce over standard race distances. This is useful for setting a realistic goal time before race day, especially if you've run a shorter distance and want to estimate performance over a longer one.

Why did my pace calculator differ from my GPS watch?

GPS watches can drift by a few percent depending on satellite signal, tree cover, tall buildings, or tunnels, so a watch-measured distance is rarely perfectly exact. This calculator uses the exact distance and time you type in, so if your watch slightly over- or under-measured the run, that error carries through. For the most accurate result, use an officially measured distance (like a certified race course) when possible.

What's a "negative split" and should I aim for one?

A negative split means running the second half of a race faster than the first half. Many coaches consider it the most efficient pacing strategy, since starting conservatively preserves energy for a strong finish rather than fading in the final miles. This calculator assumes a constant pace throughout, so if you're planning a negative split, treat the predicted time as your overall average rather than a per-mile target.

How can I improve my pace over time?

Consistent, structured training — a mix of easy runs, tempo runs, and interval work — tends to improve pace more reliably than simply running harder every session. Tracking your pace over weeks (rather than comparing single runs) gives a clearer picture of whether training is working, since day-to-day pace naturally varies with fatigue, weather, and terrain.

Does this account for hills or altitude?

No — the calculator assumes flat, consistent conditions. Hilly courses, high altitude, heat, and humidity can all slow you down relative to a flat, sea-level effort, sometimes significantly. If you're using a hilly training run to predict a flat race time (or vice versa), expect the actual result to differ from the prediction.
